Camp Program Descriptions

Roaring into Robots: What’s NeXT: Ages 8-14

This exciting class teaches you how to build and program the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots, the coolest robot available. You will use your new skills to meet such challenges as reacting to intruders, moving objects to different locations, stinging an intruder with a robot tail, or beating your opponent at LEGO® Sumo, a BBB favorite.

You don’t need any experience with robotics or programming to begin your robotic adventure. Students who took our robotics After School Class can take this for a more solid foundation or move on to the Advanced Robot Challenges. All robot classes will be taught with the new LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robot.

*Robots are for use by students in class only.  Students will not be able to take them home.

Advanced Robot Challenges: Ages 8-14

We’ll challenge your engineering and programming skills with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robot. Build and compete in a jousting tournament.  Build a walking bot.  Use the new ultrasonic sensor to react to movement or the sound sensor to react to different sounds.  Program the new servo motors for precise movement.  The possibilities and challenges are endless.

You can work on individual challenges, challenge others, or pair up and work as a team. This course is for students who have experience with building and programming LEGO® Mindstorms® robots. Students should have a basic understanding of how to use sensors, motors and repeat blocks. This class provides new challenges each session and can be taken multiple times. All robot classes will be taught with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robot.

*Robots are for use by students in class only.  Students will not be able to take them home.

NXT Robotics Master Class: Ages 9-14

Are you a robotics master? Take this class and find out. This class is for those who have taken Roaring into Robots and Advanced Robot Challenges. You’ll be presented with challenges you may not think can be completed. You’ll work with, or compete against, other robotics masters. Can you build a 4-legged walker? Can you make a robot that climbs a wall? Can you make a gear shift with a remote control? Bring your thinking cap, this stuff is hard!

Game Creation: Ages 8-14

If you think playing computer games is fun, think what a blast learning to program your own games will be. Your imagination is the limit as you use GameMaker software to create maze, strategy, and a variety of other types of games. You’ll learn about creating sprites, objects, events and actions. Design a room, make it look the way you want, add objects and play your game. We’ll teach you how to display health, lives, score, splash screens and high score tables. Using drag and drop programming, you’ll be creating exciting, professional looking games you can play with your friends.

You can keep making games when you get home as the software is an inexpensive download from the Internet. If you think you’ve got a great idea for a game, you want to see what it would be like to be a game designer, or you just think computer games are fun, this class is for you. You must be experienced using a computer to take this class. If you’ve taken our Game Creation After School Class, this class goes into greater depth and reinforces previous learning.  Students will take home a CD with their games and the software to continue making games at home.

* GameMaker software operates on Windows OS only.

Advanced GameMaker Techniques: Ages 8-14

This class is for those already familiar with GameMaker who want to take their game creation skills to the next level. We will examine gravity, platforms, bosses, levels, effects, GML (GameMaker’s built in programming language) and learn how to keep expanding our skills. You must have already taken a Game Creation class with us or in some way demonstrate your ability to keep up with this class as basic GameMaker skills will be assumed.  Students will take home a CD with their games and the software to continue making games at home.

GameMaker Master Class: Ages 9-14

Become a GameMaker Master. This class is for those who know how to make games in GameMaker and want to work on their own projects with teacher assistance. You will learn advanced techniques, including how to write code, while working on your own game or working on the new Space Tek game. You must have taken at least one GameMaker class (such as Advanced GameMaker) and be comfortable making games on your own.   Students will take home a CD with their games and the software to continue making games at home.

Exploring Bits, Bytes & Bots: Ages 8-14

This class is the perfect introduction to Bits, Bytes & Bots’ offerings. Students will learn how to make stop-motion animated movies, build and program LEGO® Mindstorms® robots and create their own computer game.

*Robots are for use by students in class only.  Students will not be able to take them home.

Make a Movie: Ages 8-14

You will learn how to make an animated film that uses LEGO® characters and pieces to tell a story. If you’ve ever wanted to direct your own movies or like making up stories, then this camp is for you. Using digital cameras, animation software, and video editing software, you’ll create multi-scene movies with transitions, titles, credits, sound effects and narration. Design your own set with backgrounds, characters, and scenery. The stories are up to your imagination.

This is a great class to take with friends. No experience is necessary and you can take this class as many times as you like. Students take home a CD with their movies at the end of the week.

Bits, Bytes & Beyond: Ages 6-7

The computer camp for 6 – 7 year olds. You’ll build and play with real LEGO® Mindstorms robots and make animated movies that you can take home on CDs. This class meets for 3 hours rather than the 3 hours, 30 minutes of the other classes.

*Robots are for use by students in class only.  Students will not be able to take them home.
