Camp Class Descriptions

Roaring into Robots: What’s NeXT: Ages 8-14

This exciting class teaches you how to build and program the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots, the coolest robot available. You will use your new skills to meet such challenges as reacting to intruders, moving objects to different locations, stinging an intruder with a robot tail, or beating your opponent at LEGO® Sumo, a BBB favorite.

You don’t need any experience with robotics or programming to begin your robotic adventure. Students who took our robotics After School Class can take this for a more solid foundation and to work with the new NXT system or move on to the Advanced Robot Challenges. All robot classes will be taught with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robot. The robot system includes the programming language, LEGO building system, and touch, light, sound, and ultrasonic sensors.

Movie Making: Ages 8-14

A Brick film is an animated film that uses LEGO® characters and pieces to tell a story. If you’ve ever wanted to direct your own movies or like making up stories, then this camp is for you. Using digital cameras, Stop Motion Pro animation software, and video editing software, you’ll create multi-scene movies with transitions, titles, credits, sound effects and narration. Design your own set with backgrounds, characters, and scenery. The stories are up to your imagination.

This is a great class to take with friends. No experience is necessary and you can take this class as many times as you like. Students take home a DVD with their movies at the end of the week.

Game Creation

Ages 8-14 If you think playing computer games is fun, think what a blast learning to program your own games will be. Your imagination is the limit as you use GameMaker software to create maze, strategy, and a variety of other types of games. You’ll learn about creating sprites, objects, events and actions. Design a room, make it look the way you want, add objects and play your game. We’ll teach you how to display health, lives, score, splash screens and high score tables. Using drag and drop programming, you’ll be creating exciting, professional looking games you can play with your friends.

You can keep making games when you get home as the software is an inexpensive download from the Internet. If you think you’ve got a great idea for a game, you want to see what it would be like to be a game designer, or you just think computer games are fun, this class is for you. You must be experienced using a computer to take this class. If you’ve taken our Game Creation After School Class, this class goes into greater depth and reinforces previous learning. Software works on Windows OS only.

Bits, Bytes & Beyond: Ages 6-7

The computer camp for 6 – 7 year olds. You’ll build and play with real LEGO® Mindstorms robots and make LEGO animated movies that you can take home on CDs. This class meets for 3 hours rather than the 3 hours, 30 minutes of the other classes.

*Robots are for use by students in class only. The robots are expensive, and students

Exploring Bits, Bytes & Bots: Ages 8-14

This class is the perfect introduction to Bits, Bytes & Bots’ offerings. Students will learn how to make stop-motion animated movies, build and program LEGO® Mindstorms® robots and create their own computer game. We’ll spend about a day and a half per topic.

*Robots are for use by students in class only. The robots are expensive, and students will not be able to take them home.

Intro to Computer Animation

Available to children who have completed 5th grade through 16 years olds. This class uses computer software to teach students how to create their own animated stories. Students will learn how to draw objects and characters, use timelines, ‘bones’ and layers to animate their characters and scenes, use a storyboard to plot their movies, and add text and sounds to their animations. The goal of the class will be for students to complete a short anime movie. This class is great for anyone interested in art, animation and movie making. You must have graduated the 5th grade to take this class.

Advanced GameMaker Ages 8-14

This class is for those already familiar with GameMaker who want to take their game creation skills to the next level. We will examine gravity, platforms, bosses, levels, effects, GML (GameMaker’s built in programming language) and learn how to keep expanding our skills. You must have already taken a Game Creation class with us or in some way demonstrate your ability to keep up with this class as basic GameMaker skills will be assumed.  Software works on Windows OS only.

Advanced Robot Challenges: Ages 8-14

We’ll challenge your engineering and programming skills with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robot. Want to learn how to build a walking bot? Have 2 or 3 robots working together by sending Bluetooth messages to each other? Use the new ultrasonic sensor to react to movement or the sound sensor to react to different sounds? Program the new servo motors for precise movement? The possibilities and challenges are endless.

You can work on individual challenges, challenge others, or pair up and work as a team. This course is for students who have experience with building and programming LEGO® Mindstorms® robots. Students should have a basic understanding of how to use sensors, motors and repeat blocks. This class provides new challenges each session and can be taken multiple times. All robot classes will be taught with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robot.

3D Game Design

Available to children who have completed 6th grade through 16 years old.

Create 3D buildings, mazes, and landscapes, add bonus items, hidden treasures and characters and play in your own world! This exciting class is for students who have completed the 6th grade. You’ll learn how to create a 3D environment, light it, and put in characters for first-person or third-person action. We will be using 3D GameStudio which works only with Windows OS. Warning: Although not stressed in class, this game can be played as a first person shooter game.
